Art history, archaeology, history and ancient rock art tours led by expert guides take centre stage in our exciting new full programme for the new year, which also includes $149pp deposits and huge savings for early bookers of up to $675pp!

There's a broad selection of fascinating tours in our new brochure, both brand new and returning, and all of the departures will be led by our team of renowned expert guide lecturers. New tours on offer for 2021 range from an archaeological adventure in both Thailand and Laos, which includes visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a cruise along the Mekong River, to a tour named Conquering the Aztecs, which will see you explore the floating gardens of Xochimilco as well as an array of temples and sites of historic significance. There are also a handful of new art history tours available for next year, which delve into the lives and works of Piera Della Francesca and Caravaggio, in addition to a tour that focuses on French Impressionism and another that studies Dutch Painters set in the Netherlands.

There are also a host of brand new UK-based tours available for 2021, which include two tours centred around the life and works of writer Agatha Christie, a chance to go behind-the-scenes in Roman Kent, a Wartime Britain short break that visits the nerve centres of the Battle of Britain, and a T. E. Lawrence tour that covers the county of Dorset.

History lovers will be interested in our four-day Henry VIII tour, which is led by none other than Suzannah Lipscomb, and there is also a Richard III tour along with the return of the company’s harrowing Face of Evil tour, which traces the story of Nazi Germany in sites associated with the party’s birth, rise to power and eventual collapse.

Returning tours include our ever-popular Pompeii experience, which is eight days in duration and features a range of private access visits to sites and archaeological hotspots off-limits to members of the public, our long-running Dordogne Cave Art tour, our extensive Chile & Easter Island adventure, and even a chance to discover the rock art in the Namibian wilds.

There are also a selection of cruises on offer for 2021, from European river cruises that stop at historic cities where ancient Roman ruins can be seen, to multi-centre ocean cruises such as its Jordan, Egypt and Israel cruise, which includes visits to the bucket-list site of Petra along with chances to visit the legendary Pyramids, the UNESCO-listed Church of the Nativity and the staggering Temple of Karnak. 

Face of Evil

Join history and archaeology expert Nick Jackson in Germany to chart the rise and fall of the Third Reich. Tour the remains of Hitler’s Berghof home, ride in Hitler’s personal lift to the summit of Kehlstein Mountain for a tour of the Eagle’s Nest and pay a sombre visit to the first Nazi concentration camp at Dachau.

Thailand & Laos

Experience a twin-centre trip that visits ancient Buddhist kingdoms. This tour includes a day exploring the great Khmer temples of Muang Tham and Phimai, a visit to the UNESCO-listed Luang Prabang, and a tour of the mysterious Plain of Jars. Miranda Bruce-Mitford is the expert guide for this tour, a specialist in Buddhist art and architecture.

Morocco & Andalucia

Another twin-centre tour, this time exploring the nexus between Africa and Europe. Discover the extensive ruins of Volubilis, visit Fez with its UNESCO-listed medina, visit the iconic Alhambra, and examine the site of Gadir with both Phoenician and Roman remains.

Conquering the Aztecs

2021 marks the 500th anniversary of the Spanish Conquest of the Aztecs, and this new tour explores both the Aztecs’ antecedents and the rise of their own empire. Go boating among the floating gardens of Xochimilco, visit the rock-cut shrine at Malinalco and the paradise murals in the monastery below, and the Aztecs’ ruined Great Temple.

Caravaggio & his Followers

Spend a week in glorious Italy, exploring locations around Rome and Naples that are linked to the great artist, along with paying visits to museums and galleries that house his works. Enjoy private visits to the Collezione Odescalchi and the Casino di Villa Boncompagni Ludovisi, explore the Vatican Museums, and tour Galleria Borghese with its stunning collection of Caravaggio paintings.

Croatia’s Istrian and Dalmatian Coast

A chance to explore the archaeology of Croatia set against the backdrop of the beautiful Adriatic. Visit the palace of Emperor Diocletian, see the remarkable Roman remains in Zadar and Pula, and discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trogir.

Agatha Christie & the English Riviera

Gain insight into the life of this famous novelist on a memorable tour of Devon. Visit Greenway House, the Victorian mansion that Christie and Max Mallowan called their home for many years; explore the museum in Torquay that houses the only permanent exhibition on the writer; and discover the places that inspired Christie’s many books.

Wartime Britain – Dogfights and Double Agents

Led by Colonel Paul Beaver, this short break visits the nerve centres of the Battle of Britain. Explore Air Chief Marshal Dowding’s office at Bentley Priory, see the RAF Fighter Command’s No.11 Group Operations Room bunker and spend time at Bletchley Park.
