Dr Agata Chrzanowska is an art historian specialized in both Early Modern painting and in photography studies.
Dr Agata Chrzanowska is an art historian specialized in both Early Modern painting and in photography studies. She obtained her PhD from Durham University with a thesis on the relationship between narrative fresco cycles and religious spectacles in fifteenth-century Florence. Agata is particularly interested in the study of the images in dialogue with religion, devotion and power. She has studied Domenico Ghirlandaio and Filippo Lippi’s artistic production as well as the history of Polish photography and twentieth-century art. During her professional career she has collaborated with the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and the Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw. Currently Agata collaborates with the British Institute in Florence and carries on her own research projects
What first sparked your interest in art history?
My interest in art history started with my passion for photography, that I cultivated since high school. Later, during my universities studies, my tutor, prof. Halina Manikowska, introduced me into the fascinating world of Renaissance Italy. After the conclusion of my MA programs in Warsaw I decided to continue my research in the field.
If you can – which is your favourite artwork?
My favourite art work is Michelangelo's decoration of the New Sacristy in Florence, the tombs of the two Medici Dukes and statues representing the allegories of time. In this work sculpture and architecture merge and create a unique artistic continuum.
What does art mean to you?
Art makes me free, it moves my imagination, it touches my emotions and makes me feel alive!
