The Republic of Peru is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peruvian territory was home to several ancient cultures; from the Norte Chico civilisation in the 32nd century BC, the oldest civilisation in the Americas and one of the five cradles of civilisation, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in pre-Columbian America, the territory now including Peru has one of the longest histories of civilisation of any country, tracing its heritage back to the 4th millennia BCE.

A visa is not required to enter Peru and you are able to visit for up to 183 days if you carry a UK or USA passport.

Packing advice:

There is no formal dress code in Peru. There are no strict social taboos or religious requirements to consider when it comes to clothing etiquette. However, there is still an ingrained sense of tradition and conservatism within Peruvian society so dress more formally when entering a religious building.

Cultural differences:

Peru has retained much of its mythical feel. The Quechua and Aymara, Inca descendants, blend their culture with Spanish influences which has created a rich Peruvian culture of art, architecture and music. Peru today has a rich and varied folklore plus a wide range of musical styles and dances, which blend indigenous genres and spirit with Hispanic influences, as well as modern styles which have adapted to the changes and tastes of society's main social groups. Peruvians are very proud of their food, it is a key part of their identity. Any conversations about enjoying Peruvians' culinary tastes is likely to make a good impression.

Quechua, Aymara, Spanish, and other indigenous languages.

Tipping:
