Temple ruins at Quirigua

Honduras is a Central American country with the Pacific Ocean to the south and Caribbean Sea coastlines to the north. The ancient Maya ceremonial site Copán has stone-carved hieroglyphics and stelae, tall stone monuments in the tropical rainforest near Guatemala. In the Caribbean Sea are the Bay Islands, a diving destination that's part of the 1000km-long Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

Honduras’ most famous historical site is the extraordinary Maya ruins at Copán. This extremely well-preserved ancient city includes some of the finest Maya stelae in the world, and its greatest king was called 13 Rabbit. The Copán site is located in dense forest which is also home to the spectacular scarlet macaw. It is also home to the charmingly preserved town of Copán Ruinas, a laid back and friendly oasis full of cobble stone streets and colonial-era houses. Honduras is a fascinating and exotic destination rich in history and vibrant in colour.
