Oberammergau 2022

The legendary play created from the desperation of a deadly plague saw its almost 400-year history disrupted by a modern-day pandemic, but it will return in 2022 and we have just launched a series of exciting tour itineraries.

Germany’s Oberammergau Passion Play was first staged in 1634, a year after citizens of the charming Bavarian village by the same name made a desperate plea to God that if no more lives were taken by the deadly plague, they would perform a play depicting Christ’s life, suffering, death and resurrection once every ten years as a way of showing eternal gratitude. The villagers kept their promise and the Passion Play has only seen a few incidents where it had to be postponed or cancelled throughout its almost 400-year history, with the most recent being this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

We are offering a special low deposit offer of just £99pp and early booking discount of up to £150pp that will run until 30th November 2020 on our new range of Oberammergau tours.

We will operate our brand new Oberammergau & the Way of St. James tour, which departs on 9th July and is led by none other than British writer Giles MacDonogh. This tour follows the Jakobsweg route of the Camino de Santiago, visiting spectacular pilgrimage churches and the charming villages of Lindau and Bregenz on Lake Constance. There is also an Oberammergau & Mozart’s Salzburg itinerary, which is led by Barnaby Rayfield and explores the architectural marvels of Munich along with sites that are associated with the aforementioned great composer, and also features a private piano recital at Mozart’s birthplace. Finally, we are offering an Oberammergau & the Dream Castles of Bavaria tour, which again is led by Giles MacDonogh and includes visits to the fantastical fortresses of Ludwig, such as Neuschwanstein Castle, Herrenchiemsee Palace and Linderhof Palace.
